Tigers OF Ordonez placed on DL
Jun 29, 2008 - 4:35 PM DETROIT (Ticker) -- Detroit Tigers outfielder Magglio Ordonez was placed on the 15-day disabled list Sunday with a pulled right oblique muscle.Ordonez, 34, suffered the injury in Saturday's 7-6 victory over the Colorado Rockies. The slugger left the contest after Colorado's Troy Tulowitzki led off the third inning with a line-drive double to right field.
A six-time All-Star, Ordonez is batting .307 with 12 home runs and a team-leading 50 RBI this season.
The long-term absence of Ordonez could slow down the red-hot Tigers (40-40), who have won 16 of their last 20 games. After getting off to a surprisingly slow start this year, Detroit is at the .500 mark for the first time this season.
To fill Ordonez's roster spot, the Tigers recalled outfielder Matt Joyce from Class AAA Toledo. The 23-year-old Joyce appeared in 18 games with Detroit this season, batting .208 with five homers and 10 RBI.
