MINNEAPOLIS (Ticker) -- The Cleveland Indians have run out of patience with closer Joe Borowski, who was designated for assignment Friday.
After Wednesday's loss to the Chicago White Sox, Cleveland manager Eric Wedge hinted that the Indians might make a change at the back of their bullpen.
Since returning from the disabled list on May 23, Borowski posted a 4.26 ERA and blew two of his six save opportunities. Overall, he made 18 appearances for the Indians this season, registering a 1-3 record with a 7.56 ERA and just six saves.
Borowski led the American League in saves last season with 45 despite a 5.07 ERA.
The Indians also recalled righthanders Jensen Lewis and Brian Slocum from Class AAA Buffalo of the International League and designated righthander Rick Bauer for assignment.
Lewis spent the first two months of the season with Cleveland, going 0-2 with a 3.81 ERA in 21 games.
Slocum has spent the majority of the year at Buffalo and was converted to a reliever three weeks ago. He flourished in the new role, posting one save and a 0.69 in seven relief outings for the Bisons.
Bauer was highly ineffective for the Indians, logging a 13.50 ERA in four appearances out of the bullpen.
