Yankees place OF Damon on disabled list

Jul 6, 2008 - 9:54 PM BRONX, New York (Ticker) -- The New York Yankees placed outfielder Johnny Damon on the 15-day disabled list for the first time in his career Sunday with a bruised AC joint in his left shoulder.

Damon suffered the injury in the top of the third inning of Friday's game against the Boston Red Sox, when he crashed into the wall while trying to catch a triple by Kevin Youkilis. He initially appeared to make the catch, but the ball bounced out of his glove and landed on top of the wall, allowing two runs to score.

Damon, who has been bothered by a sore left arch recently, is batting .319 with six home runs and 37 RBI in 82 games this season.

New York recalled outfielder Justin Christian from Class AAA Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to replace the 34-year-old Damon.

Christian, 28, hit .200 in 15 at-bats during his five-game tenure with the parent club in late June.
