Reds activate SS Cabrera

Jul 17, 2008 - 9:32 PM CINCINNATI (Ticker) -- Prior to Thursday's game against the New York Mets, the Cincinnati Reds activated shortstop Jolbert Cabrera from the 15-day disabled list.

Cabrera suffered a compound dislocation of his left index finger at Yankee Stadium on June 20 while sliding headfirst into second base. He became the fourth Cincinnati shortstop to go on the DL this season.

Prior to the injury, Cabrera had played in only seven games this season, but he was batting .389 with no home runs and two RBI. The Reds purchased his contract from Class AAA Louisville on June 10.

To make room for Cabrera on the roster, the Reds placed infielder-outfielder Jerry Hairston on the 15-day DL - retroactive to Monday - with a strained left hamstring.

Hairston suffered the injury while running out a bunt single in the third inning of Sunday's game against the Milwaukee Brewers and had to be carried off the field. After reaching first base, Hairston began limping and fell over clutching his right leg.

Hairston also missed three weeks earlier in the season with a fractured left thumb. When healthy, he has played well for the Reds this year, batting a team-high .351 with two homer and 22 RBI in 188 at-bats.

In another move, the Reds reinstated lefthander Bobby Livingston from the 60-day DL and assigned him to Class AA Chattanooga of the Southern League.
