Diamondbacks acquire 1B Clark

Jul 17, 2008 - 10:43 PM PHOENIX (Ticker) -- The Arizona Diamondbacks acquired first baseman Tony Clark on Thursday from the San Diego Padres for righthander Evan Scribner.

Clark, 36, spent three seasons in Arizona before joining San Diego this year. He batted .266 with 50 home runs and 154 RBI during his stint with the Diamondbacks, which included a 30-home run season in 2005.

"We are thrilled to bring Tony back to Arizona," Diamondbacks general manager Josh Byrnes said. "He certainly was a key ingredient to our success last year, and we hope he can contribute to another postseason run in 2008."

Clark appeared in 70 games for San Diego this season, mostly as a pinch hitter, batting .239 (21-for-88) with one home run and 11 RBI. In 1,485 career games with the Detroit Tigers, Boston Red Sox, New York Mets, New York Yankees, Diamondbacks and Padres, the veteran slugger owns a .264 average with 245 homers and 800 RBI.

Scribner, who turns 23 on Saturday, never has pitched above the Class A level. He has combined to go 2-4 with nine saves and a 1.64 ERA in 28 relief appearances with South Bend and Visalia this season.
