Angels RHP Lackey gets no-hitter broken up in ninth

Jul 30, 2008 - 5:02 AM BOSTON (Ticker) -- John Lackey came within two outs of becoming the the fourth pitcher in California Angels franchise history to throw a no-hitter on Tuesday.

Lackey has tossed 8 1/3 hitless frames before Dustin Pedroia's single in the ninth ended his no-hit bid. Kevin Youkilis followed with a two-run homer to end the shutout, but Lackey wrapped up his second complete game of the season.

The 29-year-old Lackey yielded two walks with four strikeouts. He also hit J.D. Drew with a pitch in the second.

Lackey was attempting to become the first Angels pitcher to throw a no-hitter since Mike Witt tossed a perfect game on September 30, 1984. Nolan Ryan threw four no-hitters in an Angels uniform and Clyde Wright also pitched one.
