Marlins acquire LHP Rhodes from Mariners
Jul 31, 2008 - 4:24 PM MIAMI (Ticker) -- The Florida Marlins bolstered their bullpen hours before Thursday's trade deadline, acquiring veteran lefthander Arthur Rhodes from the Seattle Mariners for a minor-league pitcher.Rhodes, 38, has appeared in 36 games this season for the Mariners, going 2-1 with a 2.86 ERA. The southpaw has limited opposing lefthanded batters to a .195 average this season.
A 17-year veteran, Rhodes owns a 4.28 ERA in 689 career games with five different teams. He joins a Marlins bullpen that already includes lefthanded specialist Renyel Pinto, who has a 2.88 ERA in 58 games this season.
In exchange for Rhodes, the Mariners acquired 21-year-old righthander Gaby Hernandez, who went 5-8 with a 6.47 ERA in 17 starts between Class AAA Albuquerque and Class AA Carolina.
