Giles vetoes trade to Red Sox

Aug 8, 2008 - 8:20 PM DENVER (Ticker) -- Brian Giles has no desire to join a contending team.

The San Diego Padres outfielder excercised his trade veto power Friday, blocking a waiver deal that would have sent him to the Boston Red Sox.

Giles, 37, was claimed off waivers by the Red Sox, and Boston and San Diego had 48 hours to make a deal. However, Giles decided to exercise a clause in his contract that allowed him to veto a trade.

By opting to stay in his native San Diego, Giles will remain with a 44-71 team already playing out the string. The defending World Series champion Red Sox (66-49) are in second place in the American League East, 2 1/2 games behind Tampa Bay.

Gile is batting .296 with six homers and 37 RBI in 103 games this season. The Padres own a $9 million option on Giles for 2009, with a $3 million buyout.
