Yankees recall RHP Kennedy

Aug 9, 2008 - 12:28 AM ANAHEIM, California (Ticker) -- The injury-stricken New York Yankees will look to get help from another young hurler who once was held in the same high regard as Joba Chamberlain.

Righthander Ian Kennedy was recalled from Class AAA Scranton/ Wilkes-Barre and will start Friday's game against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim with hopes of easing the sting of a dismal first half.

The 23-year-old most notably is known for being a prospect with which the Yankees refused to part for ace Johan Santana, who ended up with the New York Mets, prior to the season when trade rumors swirled.

However, Kennedy is 0-3 with a 7.41 ERA in nine appearances - eight starts - with the Yankees this season and has not pitched in the major leagues since May 27 because of a strained right lat muscle.

The Yankees have been without ace righthander Chien-Ming Wang since June 15 and 22-year-old righthander Phil Hughes since May 1.

Wang, 28, tore a tendon in his right foot while running the bases in a game against the Houston Astros, while Hughes is on the 60-day disabled list due to a stress fracture in his right rib cage.

In a corresponding move, righthander Chris Britton was optioned to Scranton/ Wilkes-Barre.

The 25-year-old Britton, who occupied Chamberlain's roster spot for two days, has a 3.38 ERA in five relief appearances for the Yankees this season. Chamberlain currently is sidelined with tendinitis in his right rotator cuff.
