Yankees SS Jeter not in lineup

Aug 13, 2008 - 4:45 PM MINNEAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Nearing the end of a rough 10-game road trip, the New York Yankees received more bad news Wednesday as shortstop Derek Jeter was scratched from the starting lineup with a bruised left instep suffered in Tuesday's contest.

According to the Yankees' web site, Jeter, who had three hits Tuesday, sustained the injury when he fouled a ball off his foot in the fourth inning. He hobbled at the plate, but stayed in the game and singled in his next three at-bats.

Jeter eventually was lifted for a pinch runner after recording his third single with one out in the ninth of a game the Yankees won, 9-6, in 12 innings.

X-rays were negative and manager Joe Girardi said after the game that Jeter likely would be back in the lineup Wednesday. Instead, Wilson Betemit will start at shortstop and bat eighth in the finale of the Yankees' 10-game road swing.

Jeter, 34, is experiencing a disappointing season by his standards, hitting .284 - 31 points below his career average - with seven home runs and 57 RBI in 113 games.

New York has gone 3-6 on its trip, falling eight games behind Tampa Bay in the American League East and five games behind Boston in the wild card race.
