Blue Jays LHP Downs leaves game

Aug 14, 2008 - 4:01 AM DETROIT (Ticker) -- Toronto Blue Jays lefthander Scott Downs left in the bottom of the ninth inning of Wednesday's game against the Detroit Tigers with a sprained right ankle.

After walking Placido Polanco, Downs surrendered a base hit to Magglio Ordonez and ran to back up third base. Upon running, he twisted his ankle and fell to the ground.

"He has a right ankle sprain and will be re-assessed in a few days," Toronto manager Cito Gaston said. "If he can't pitch for a while, it will be a big loss for this team. He's done so much to help us."

The 32-year-old, who was replaced by righthander Brandon League, entered the contest 0-2 with a 1.25 ERA in 53 relief appearances this season.
