Cardinals demote Garcia, purchase contract of Phelps

LOUIS (Ticker) -- The St. Louis Cardinals purchased the contract of infielder Josh Phelps from Class AAA Memphis and optioned lefthander Jaime Garcia to the Redbirds on Wednesday.Garcia has appeared in 10 games this season, including one start, going 1-1 with a 5.62 ERA. The lefthander will rejoin Memphis' starting rotation.
The 30-year old Phelps has hit .291 with 31 home runs and 97 RBI in 126 games for Memphis.
The Cardinals also transferred lefthander Mark Mulder to the 60-day disabled list. Mulder, who missed the first three months of the campaign after offseason shoulder surgery, made two relief appearances before leaving his start on July 9 with a left shoulder strain after facing just three batters.
