Phillies recall LHP Castro

Aug 29, 2008 - 12:11 AM CHICAGO (Ticker) -- The Philadelphia Phillies added a lefthander to their bullpen Thursday, when they recalled Fabio Castro from Class AAA Lehigh Valley of the International League.

The 23-year-old Castro has not appeared in the major leagues this season but has posted an 8-4 record and 4.68 ERA in 30 games - 18 starts - with Lehigh Valley and Class AA Reading of the Eastern League, recording 105 strikeouts in 120 1/3 innings.

In 30 career major league games - one start - with the Texas Rangers and Phillies, Castro is 0-1 with one save and a 3.30 ERA.

To make room on the roster, Philadelphia optioned righthander Andrew Carpenter to Reading. After having his contract purchased on Wednesday, the 23-year-old Carpenter made his major league debut later that evening, tossing a scoreless inning in the Phillies' 6-3 loss to the New York Mets.
