Manny Ramirez named NL Player of the Month

Sep 3, 2008 - 8:25 PM LOS ANGELES (Ticker) - Manny Ramirez made the most of his first month in the National League.

The superstar outfielder was named the NL Player of the Month on Wednesday after hitting .415 with nine homers and 25 RBI. Ramirez was acquired from the Boston Red Sox at the trading deadline.

The 36-year-old made his presence in the Dodgers lineup felt immediately, going 2-for-4 in his debut on August 1 and homering in his next two games. He remained hot for the rest of August.

Ramirez put together back-to-back four-hit games on August 29-30 - the first time in his career he did so - including a two-homer performance in a 6-2 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Saturday.

His .415 average in August not only led the National League, it was the highest mark of his career for a full month. With both Boston and Los Angeles, he is hitting .326 with 30 home runs and 97 RBI.

The Houston Astros' Ty Wigginton, the St. Louis Cardinals' Albert Pujols, the Milwaukee Brewers' Mike Cameron, the Chicago Cubs' Mark DeRosa and the Atlanta Braves' Martin Prado also received votes.
