MLB upholds scoring call in Brewers-Pirates game

Sep 3, 2008 - 10:22 PM NEW YORK (Ticker) -- C.C. Sabathia will have to settle for a one-hitter.

Major League Baseball's Scoring Review committee upheld Bob Webb's scoring call of Andy LaRoche's single in the fifth inning of Sunday's game between the Milwaukee Brewers and Pittsburgh Pirates. Controversy swelled after the game, as that was the only hit Sabathia allowed en route to a 7-0 victory.

The Brewers appealed the scoring decision, hoping to have it changed an error, thus giving Sabathia a no-hitter. The team sent a DVD to the MLB offices on Monday and the committee analyzed it on Wednesday, but came away with the same determination as did Webb.

The members of the committee determined that the ruling was not "clearly erroneous" and thus could not be reversed.

"Major League Baseball appreciates the work that official scorers do throughout the season," said Phyllis Merhige, MLB's senior vice president for club relations. "Bob Webb is a 20-year veteran scorer who is held in high regard. This play is a reminder of the difficult decisions that official scorers face."
