ANAHEIM, California (Ticker) -- New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter stroked his 2,519th career hit, a single in the first inning of Tuesday's game against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, to pass Babe Ruth for second place on the team's all-time list.
"Anytime you can be mentioned in the same sentence with those guys is special," Jeter said. "I just try to be consistent and play hard. It's hard to believe, and it just sounds funny passing Babe. I'm just fortunate, and that's all I can say."
On Sunday, Jeter tied Ruth. Lou Gehrig is the Yankees' all-time hits leader with 2,721 hits.
