Reds 2B Phillips to undergo surgery

Sep 10, 2008 - 11:10 PM MILWAUKEE (Ticker) -- Cincinnati Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips on Friday will undergo surgery in which a pin will be inserted into his broken right finger.

Phillips suffered the fracture when he was hit by a pitch on a bunt attempt in the 11th inning of Wednesday's game against the Milwaukee Brewers. He stayed in the contest and delivered the go-ahead RBI single later in the at-bat, lifting the Reds to a 5-4 victory.

After the game, however, the team announced that Phillips would miss the remainder of the season. He returned to Cincinnati on Wednesday to be examined by Reds medical director Dr. Timothy Kremchek, who will perform the surgery.

Phillips, 27, posted a .261 batting average with 21 home runs and 78 RBI in 141 games this campaign.
