Reds 2B Phillips undergoes surgery

Sep 12, 2008 - 9:42 PM CINCINNATI (Ticker) -- Cincinnati Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips on Friday underwent surgery on his broken right finger.

During the 45-minute procedure, two pins were inserted into the finger to facilitate healing.

Phillips suffered the fracture when he was hit by a pitch on a bunt attempt in the 11th inning of Wednesday's game against the Milwaukee Brewers. He stayed in the contest and delivered the go-ahead RBI single later in the at-bat, lifting the Reds to a 5-4 victory.

After the game, however, the team announced that Phillips would miss the remainder of the season.

Phillips, 27, posted a .261 batting average with 21 home runs and 78 RBI in 141 games this campaign.
