Zambrano named NL Player of Week

Sep 15, 2008 - 7:08 PM NEW YORK (Ticker) -- After tossing a no-hitter, Chicago Cubs righthander Carlos Zambrano on Monday was named the National League Player of the Week.

Making his first start on Sunday since September 2 due to tendinitis in his right shoulder, Zambrano struck out 10 batters and walked one against the Houston Astros in the relocated game at Milwaukee's Miller Park on Sunday night.

The 27-year-old righthander's no-hitter was the first by a Cub since Milt Pappas threw one against the San Diego Padres on September 2, 1972, at Wrigley Field. In leading the Cubs to the 5-0 victory, the three-time N.L. All-Star also helped his own cause at the plate with a single and a run scored as part of Chicago's four-run third inning.

The outing was Zambrano's eighth career complete game and third career shutout, including his first since May 7, 2004, against Colorado. He is now 14-5 with a 3.41 ERA and 127 strikeouts in 28 starts.

Also considered for the honor were New York Mets teammates Carlos Beltran, Carlos Delgado, Jon Niese, Fernando Tatis and David Wright.
