Jeter passes Gehrig for Yankee Stadium record
Sep 17, 2008 - 3:40 AM BRONX, New York (Ticker) -- New York Yankees captain Derek Jeter made Yankee Stadium history on Tuesday with his 1,270th career hit at the ballpark.Jeter singled to left field in the first inning against Chicago White Sox righthander Gavin Floyd to pass Hall of Famer Lou Gehrig for the lead in all-time hits at the historic stadium, which will close its doors at the end of the team's current homestand on Sunday.
"I think it's good to try and get it over with," Jeter said of reaching the milestone. "It's pretty special. We needed a hit in that situation. We're trying to score some runs."
The Yankees will move into a new stadium across the street next April.
Jeter also has 8,002 at-bats as a Yankee, passing Gehrig for second place on the franchise list.
