Yankees SS Jeter expects to play Sunday
Sep 20, 2008 - 10:18 PM BRONX, New York (Ticker) -- Despite leaving the game in obvious pain, New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter doesn't plan on missing the last game at Yankee Stadium.Jeter was taken out of Saturday's 1-0 victory over the Baltimore Orioles in the ninth inning after getting hit on the left wrist by a pitch from Jim Miller but did not suffer a serious injury.
"Obviously, it doesn't feel good," Jeter said. "It's not broken."
The pitch hit Jeter in the exact same spot that he was plunked by Baltimore starter Daniel Cabrera on May 22. Jeter did not miss any time then, and there is little doubt that he will be in the lineup for Sunday's finale at New York's 85-year-old ballpark. The team will move across the street to a new park next season.
"It's not broken," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "I'm sure it's going to be sore tomorrow but I'd imagine he'd be in (the lineup)."
Jeter, who was 0-for-3 before his departure, immediately was escorted off the field by Girardi and trainer Gene Monahan. He slammed his helmet down and went directly to clubhouse for X-rays.
The captain and face of the franchise, Jeter passed Lou Gehrig last week as the team's all-time hits leader at Yankee Stadium, making his absence for the historic park's finale a concern.
No one has shouted yet.
