Giants sign Snow to one-day contract

Sep 25, 2008 - 8:35 PM SAN FRANCISCO (Ticker) -- Wanting to officially retire as a member of the San Francisco Giants, first baseman J.T. Snow signed a one-day contract with his former team Thursday.

Snow, who last saw action in the major leagues with the Boston Red Sox in 2006, will take the field in uniform for Saturday's game against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Saturday. He spent nine seasons in San Francisco from 1997-2005.

Giants general manager Brian Sabean said Snow will leave the field before the first pitch is thrown so that he can receive an ovation from the fans at AT&T Park. There is still a chance that the Dodgers would need to win the game to clinch the National League West Division title.

"I think sometimes from a personal and professional standpoint, things need closure," Giants Sabean said. "I don't think anybody that has ever been associated with J.T. as a Giant would want anything but what we're attempting to do."

The Giants signed Snow, 40, after getting approval from the Commissioner's office. Sabean drafted Snow in 1989, when he was a scouting director for the New York Yankees.

"It's exciting for me," Snow said. "This is where I grew up as a player. This is going to be a fun day."

A six-time Glove Award winner, Snow hit .268 with 189 home runs and 877 RBI in 15 seasons with the Yankees, Angels, Giants and Boston Red Sox.
