SANTO DOMINIGO, Dominican Republic (Ticker) -- New York Mets pitcher Ambiorix Burgos was ordered Wednesday to serve three months in jail while awaiting trial for a traffic incident that killed two women, according to a report from the Dominican Today.

According to the newspaper, the judge ruled that Burgos violated the transit law while driving a Hummer that collided with a motorcycle on September 30, causing the deaths of Josefina Minaya and Anyely Fana.

Burgos, who missed the entire 2008 season recovering from elbow ligament replacement surgery, was arrested early in September for assaulting his girlfriend.

The 24-year-old Burgos is 8-10 with 20 saves and a 4.60 over 114 career appearances with the Mets and Kansas City Royals.
