Manuel managing Game Two after death of mother
Oct 10, 2008 - 9:59 PM PHILADELPHIA (Ticker) -- Philadelphia Phillies manager Charlie Manuel's mother died Friday morning, just hours before Game Two of their National League Championship Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers.June Manuel suffered a heart attack on Tuesday. She was 87.
June Manuel, who resided in Buena Vista, Virginia, raised 11 children, with Charlie the third oldest.
"The Phillies organization is saddened by the news of the death of June Manuel, the mother of our manager," Phillies president and CEO David Montgomery said in a statement. "Our hearts go out to Charlie and the Manuel family at this most difficult time.
"Mrs. Manuel instilled the qualities of hard work, loyalty and a caring good nature that we have come to respect and appreciate from our manager and friend."
Manuel likely will go to Virginia at some point to deal with the family affairs. Saturday is an off day and Game Three of the NLCS is Sunday in Los Angeles.
