Report: Cubs close to re-signing GM Hendry

Oct 18, 2008 - 10:46 PM CHICAGO (Ticker) -- The Chicago Cubs and general manager Jim Hendry are closing in on a contract extension, according to a report Saturday on the Chicago Sun-Times' web site.

Hendry, who has served as the Cubs' GM since the 2002 season, is in the final guaranteed year of his contract but holds an option for the 2009 season.

The extension would guarantee the next three years, according to the report.

The Cubs have been put up for sale by the Tribune Company, and the current economic climate has slowed the process, leaving an uncertain future. Hendry staying on board would help stabilize the team's baseball operations department.

Chicago has yet to comment on the negotiations, but the team denied the Seattle Mariners' request to speak to Hendry about their vacant GM position.

An announcement could come during organizational meetings in Arizona next week, according to the report.

Hendry built the Cubs into a power this season, as they led the National League in wins before being swept in the Division Series by the Los Angeles Dodgers. Chicago has made the playoffs three times during Hendry's tenure.
