Athletics, 2B Ellis agree to extension

Oct 20, 2008 - 7:10 PM OAKLAND, California (Ticker) -- The Oakland Athletics and second baseman Mark Ellis agreed to terms on a two-year contract Monday.

Financial terms of the deal, which keeps Ellis in Oakland through the 2010 season with a club option for 2011, were not disclosed.

Ellis batted a career-low .233 with three home runs, 12 RBI and 14 stolen bases over 117 games. He missed the final month of the season, undergoing surgery on his right shoulder on September 19.

The 31-year-old Ellis led all major league second baseman with a .993 fielding percentage this season. His career .989 fielding percentage is the fourth best in MLB history among second basemen with 650 or more games.
