Rangers hire Maddux as pitching coach

Nov 3, 2008 - 10:57 PM ARLINGTON, Texas (Ticker) -- The Texas Rangers named Mike Maddux as their new pitching coach Monday.

Maddux, 47, had been the pitching coach for the Milwaukee Brewers the past six seasons. His pitching staff ranked second in the National League last season with a 3.85 ERA.

"As we've said since the end of the season, improving our pitching staff is our top priority for next season," Rangers general manager Jon Daniels said. "Mike has a proven track record at the major league level.

"He has both coached a staff that has been in postseason contention each of the last two years, and also helped develop young pitchers."

Andy Hawkins, who finished the 2008 season as the club's pitching coach, will remain with the Rangers as the bullpen coach.

"With Mike and Andy, this completes what I believe is a top-notch coaching staff that combines major league experience and a thorough knowledge of our organization," Texas manager Ron Washington said. "I am looking forward to working with this group."

"Andy did an admirable job under tough circumstances this season and we welcome him back to the staff as bullpen coach," Daniels said.
