World champions Burrell, Moyer file for free agency

Nov 6, 2008 - 11:54 PM NEW YORK (Ticker) -- Pat Burrell has gone from villain to hero in the "City of Brotherly Love," but he could have a new address next season.

Burrell and teammate Jamie Moyer, who each had a part in the Philadelphia Phillies' first World Series title in 28 years, were among the three players to file for free agency on Thursday.

Burrell has heard his fair share of boos from the Philadelphia fans during his nine-year tenure with the Phillies, but he came up huge in the Game Five series-clinching win over the Tampa Bay Rays. Burrell hit just .067 in the series but laced a long double off Chad Bradford in the seventh inning that led to the winning run in the 4-3 triumph.

The 32-year-old Burrell hit .250 with 33 home runs and 86 RBI in 157 regular-season games.

Meanwhile, the 45-year-old Moyer left his mark in the series as well. The crafty lefthander allowed three runs and five hits in 5 1/3 innings of Game Three - a rain-delayed 5-4 win by Philadelphia.

Moyer, who turns 46 on November 18, was the second-oldest player to appear in a World Series game. Jack Quinn was 47 when he pitched for the Philadelphia Athletics in 1930.

The 22-year veteran was the Phillies' most reliable starter in the regular season, going 16-7 with a 3.71 ERA in 33 starts.

Los Angeles Dodgers righthander Brad Penny also filed for free agency on Thursday.

Penny was limited to 18 starts due to shoulder surgery and returned in a relief role on September 10 before going on the disabled list a second time two weeks later. He was left off the team's postseason roster.

The nine-year veteran went 6-9 with a 6.27 ERA last season.
