Report: Maddux to announce retirement
Dec 6, 2008 - 1:14 PM DANA POINT, California (Ticker) -- Greg Maddux, the eighth-winningest pitcher in major league history, reportedly will announce his retirement Monday at the winter meetings in Las Vegas.During the first day of the general managers' meetings on November 3, Maddux's agent, Scott Boras, said his client intended to retire.
"I talked to Greg at the end of the season, and he said at this point, his intentions are not to play next year," Boras said at the time.
According to an announcement from Boras' office Friday, Maddux will make the official announcement of his retirement next week.
Arguably the greatest pitcher of his generation, Maddux has a lifetime record of 355-227, with 109 complete games, 35 shutouts and a 3.16 ERA in parts of 23 seasons with the Chicago Cubs, Atlanta Braves, Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres.
Maddux, who turns 43 in April, earned four straight Cy Young awards with the Braves from 1992-95, but the future Hall of Famer won his only World Series title in 1995.
He began last season with the Padres and finished the year working mostly out of the bullpen for the National League West champion Dodgers.
Maddux went 14-11 with the Padres in 2007, and the team decided to exercise its option on him for the 2008 season. After going 6-9 in 26 starts, San Diego traded him to Los Angeles for the stretch run.
He posted a 2-4 record in his second stint with the Dodgers and allowed two runs in four innings in the playoffs.
No one has shouted yet.
