Rays non-tender OF Gomes

PETERSBURG, Florida (Ticker) -- The Tampa Bay Rays on Friday did not tender a contract for 2009 to outfielder-designated hitter Jonny Gomes.Gomes, 28, has spent parts of the last six seasons with the Rays, batting .235 with 66 homers and 184 RBI. He slumped to .182 in 77 games in 2008 with eight home runs and 14 RBI before being squeezed out of the DH-corner outfield rotation by Rocco Baldelli, Cliff Floyd, Gabe Gross and Eric Hinske.
Gomes' 66 home runs rank fifth in Rays history and first among righthanded hitters.
