Tigers sign SS Everett

Dec 15, 2008 - 4:27 PM DETROIT (Ticker) -- The Detroit Tigers took a step toward improving their infield defense on Monday, officially signing shortstop Adam Everett to a one-year contract.

Financial terms were not disclosed, but the deal reportedly is worth $1 million plus incentives.

Known as one of the best defensive shortstops in the game, Everett has compiled a .976 fielding percentage during his career.

"We are pleased to add Adam Everett to the Tigers organization," general manager David Dombrowski said. "Improving our defense was a priority for our club this winter, and we feel Adam is one of the top defensive shortstops in the game."

Everett batted .213 in 127 at-bats with the Minnesota Twins last season and is a career .246 hitter in parts of eight seasons.

Everett could potentially replace Edgar Renteria, who committed 16 errors and batted .270 last season for the Tigers. Renteria signed a two-year contract with the San Francisco Giants on December 4.
