Orioles sign SS Izturis
Dec 16, 2008 - 1:13 PM BALTIMORE (Ticker) - The Baltimore Orioles announced on Tuesday that the club has signed free agent shortstop Cesar Izturis to a two-year contract.Financial terms were not disclosed, but The Baltimore Sun has reported that the contract is believed to be worth about $6 million.
Izturis batted .263 with a home run, 24 RBI and 24 stolen bases in 135 games with St. Louis Cardinals last season.
The 28-year-old, who posted a .980 fielding percentage in 2008, is expected to bring consistency to a position that was a revolving door in Baltimore last season.
The club traded All-Star Miguel Tejada in December 2007, resulting in five different players starting 26 or more games at shortstop for the Orioles last season.
A former Gold Glove Award winner and 2005 All-Star, Izturis has batted .260 with 12 home runs, 231 RBI and 86 steals over his eight major league seasons.
In addition to the Cardinals, Izturis has played with Toronto, Los Angeles, the Chicago Cubs and Pittsburgh.
