Report: Furcal deal with Braves not done

Dec 17, 2008 - 12:57 AM LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- The Rafael Furcal saga took another turn late Tuesday.

Hours after he reportedly agreed to a three-year, $30 million deal with the Atlanta Braves, Furcal's agent Paul Kinzer told Foxsports.com his client has not made a decision yet.

Kinzer told the web site that no formal agreement has been reached, but that the Braves are the "favorite." Furcal spent the first six seasons of his career in Atlanta.

"I told him to sleep on it, and that we would talk about it today," Kinzer told Foxsports.com. "I didn't want him to make an emotional decision.

"Obviously, he's excited about the Braves. But I don't want him to make a decision that he is not comfortable with and that he will regret later."

The Oakland Athletics and Furcal's other former team, the Los Angeles Dodgers, are in the running for his services as well. Oakland reportedly offered a four-year deal in the $40 million range.

Furcal left the Braves after the 2005 season to sign a three-year, $39 million free-agent contract with the Dodgers.

A .286 lifetime hitter with 259 steals, Furcal played in just 36 games last season because of a back injury that eventually required surgery.

Signing the 31-year-old Furcal would give Atlanta the option of trading shortstop Yunel Escobar, whose name had come up in recent trade talks involving San Diego Padres starter Jake Peavy.
