Yankees sign RHP Wang to one-year deal

Dec 22, 2008 - 10:48 PM BRONX, New York (Ticker) -- The New York Yankees on Monday avoided arbitration with Chien-Ming Wang, signing the righthander to a one-year, $5 million contract.

Wang, 28, was 8-2 with a 4.07 ERA in 15 starts last season before being placed on the disabled list on June 17 with a mid-foot sprain of the Lisfranc ligament and a partial tear of a tendon in his right foot.

Wang suffered the injury while running the bases in an interleague game against Houston, and his absence was a key reason the Yankees missed the playoffs for the first time in 15 years.

The Taiwanese-born Wang recorded consecutive 19-win seasons in 2006 and 2007, becoming the first Yankee to do so since Tommy John in 1979-80.

Wang is 54-20 with a 3.79 ERA in 97 games in four seasons with the Yankees, who bolstered their rotation by signing CC Sabathia and A.J. Burnett this offseason.
