Padres agree to terms with IF Rodriguez

Dec 24, 2008 - 10:11 PM SAN DIEGO (Ticker) - The San Diego Padres on Wednesday agreed to terms on a one-year contract with infielder Luis Rodriguez.

It was one of a flurry of moves by the Padres, who also agreed to terms with righthanded pitchers Kevin Correia, Chris Britton and Oneli Perez and catcher Eliezer Alfonzo on minor league contracts.

Rodriguez, 28, batted a career-high .287 in 64 games with the Padres last season. The switch-hitting infielder saw action primarily at shortstop, starting 45 games there.

An undrafted free agent, Rodriguez spent his first three seasons with the Minnesota Twins, but his production declined from a .269 average in his first season to .219 in his final one.

Correia, 28, went 3-8 with a 6.05 ERA, 66 strikeouts and 47 walks in 25 games with the San Francisco Giants in 2008. He has a career record of 14-22 with a 4.59 ERA in 170 appearances, including 46 starts.

Britton, 26, was 0-0 with a 5.09 ERA in 15 relief appearances for the New York Yankees in 2008. He has a career 0-3 mark with one save and a 3.83 ERA in 78 relief appearances with the Baltimore Orioles (2006) and the Yankees (2007-08).

Perez, 25, spent time with three organizations last season at the Class AAA level.

Alfonzo, 29, appeared in just five games with the Giants in 2008, batting .291. He had his best season with San Francisco in 2006, batting .266 with 12 homers and 39 RBI in 87 games.
