Rays sign OF Burrell to two-year contract
Jan 5, 2009 - 9:30 PM ST. PETERSBURG, Florida (Ticker) -- After winning a World Series in Philadelphia last season, left fielder Pat Burrell is joining the team the Phillies defeated to win the title.Burrell signed a two-year contract with the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday.
Financial terms were not disclosed, but reports have the deal worth $16 million.
Burrell, 32, who batted .260 with 33 homers and 86 RBI last year, likely will be used as a designated hitter with the Rays.
A resident of nearby by Clearwater, Burrell played in 1,306 games during his nine seasons in Philadelphia, batting .257 with 251 homers and 857 RBI. He is one of six players to hit 20 or more homers in each of the last eight seasons.
Burrell struggled in the playoffs, hitting only .227 with three homers and eight RBI in 14 games.
The Phillies defeated the Rays in five games to win only their second World Series title in franchise history.
