Phillies sign RHP Park

Jan 6, 2009 - 8:41 PM PHILADELPHIA (Ticker) -- The Philadelphia Phillies officially signed righthander Chan Ho Park to a one-year contract Tuesday.

The two sides reached an agreement last month, but the deal could not be finalized until Park passed his physical.

Financial terms were not disclosed, but the Korea Times reported in December that the contract is worth a guaranteed $2.5 million and includes performance-based bonuses that could boost it up to $5 million.

Park, 35, spent last season with the Los Angeles Dodgers and appeared in 54 games with five starts. He posted a 4-4 record with two saves and a 3.40 ERA in 95 1/3 innings.

"In Chan Ho, we've acquired a veteran guy who can pitch in either a starting role or as a reliever," Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said. "He will come to spring training and be given every opportunity to compete for a spot in the starting rotation."

Over 15 seasons, Park has a career 117-92 record and 4.34 ERA in 378 games, including 280 starts, with the Dodgers, Texas Rangers, San Diego Padres and New York Mets.

"I'm very happy to be a Phillie," Park said. "It's an honor to be on a championship team. I was trying to beat them in the playoffs last year, and now I'm trying to help them win another championship."
