Report: Mets reach agreement with RHP Redding

Jan 10, 2009 - 1:21 AM NEW YORK (Ticker) -- The New York Mets apparently have added a new piece to the back of their rotation.

According to a report by MLB.com, the Mets agreed in principle on Friday with righthander Tim Redding on a one-year, $2.25 million contract.

Redding will need to pass a physical next week to complete the deal.

The 30-year-old went 10-11 with a 4.95 ERA for the Washington Nationals in 2008 but was non-tendered by the team after the season.

Redding is 34-51 with a 4.92 ERA in parts of seven campaigns with the Houston Astros, San Diego Padres, New York Yankees and Nationals.

The Mets still are in the market for a front-end starter and reportedly have been involved in talks with righthander Derek Lowe and lefthander Oliver Perez.

Redding likely will battle rookies Jonathon Niese and Bobby Parnell for the fourth or fifth spot in the Mets' rotation.
