Report: Fielder, Brewers agree on two-year deal
Jan 22, 2009 - 9:48 PM MILWAUKEE (Ticker) - The Milwaukee Brewers reportedly have agreed to terms with first baseman Prince Fielder on a two-year contract.The Journal-Sentinel, citing a source familiar with the talks, reported that the deal is worth $18 million. The contract is pending a physical.
The Brewers have called an afternoon press conference, but the newspaper said it already had been planned before the sides reached agreement on a deal.
Fielder, who is in his first year of eligibility for salary arbitration, filed a request of $8 million for 2009. The Brewers countered with an offer of $6 million.
The portly 24-year-old first baseman belted 34 home runs and drove in 102 runs while batting .276 last season.
Fielder has swatted 112 of his 114 career homers in his last three seasons, averaging 158 games in each. In four seasons with Milwaukee, he has a .278 career batting average.
