Rockies agree with INF Atkins, avoid arbitration

Feb 4, 2009 - 12:16 AM DENVER (Ticker) -- The Colorado Rockies agreed to a one-year contract with infielder Garrett Atkins on Tuesday, reaching terms with the last of their arbitration-eligible players.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Atkins made $4.387 million last season.

Atkins hit .286 with 21 home runs and a team-leading 99 RBI in 155 games last season. The 29-year-old, who split his time between first and third base in 2008, has led the Rockies in RBI in three of the last four seasons.

In 647 career games all with Colorado, Atkins has compiled a .298 batting average, 89 home runs and 431 RBI.

Overall, the Rockies had six players that were eligible for arbitration, including recently acquired closer Huston Street, infielder Clint Barmes and lefthander Jorge De La Rosa.
