Roy, Bargnani headline NBA All-Rookie Team

May 8, 2007 - 7:11 PM NEW YORK (Ticker) -- Guard Brandon Roy of the Portland Trail Blazers and forward Andrea Bargnani of the Toronto Raptors headline the NBA All-Rookie Team, which was announced on Tuesday.

Roy fell one vote shy of a unanimous choice as NBA Rookie of the Year last week. The other first-place vote went to Bargnani.

In balloting for the All-Rookie Team, Roy received the maximum 29 First Team votes from a panel of the league's 30 coaches. A player was not eligible for selection by his own coach. Bargnani had 28 First Team votes.

Guard Randy Foye of the Minnesota Timberwolves and forward Rudy Gay of the Memphis Grizzlies were also named to the First Team, which featured six players since forwards Jorge Garbajosa of the Raptors and LaMarcus Aldridge tied for fifth.

"We all knew Brandon would make it to the First Team after winning Rookie of the Year, and while I am not surprised that LaMarcus was selected, it's validation for the excellent rookie seasons they both had," Trail Blazers general manager Kevin Pritchard said. "For the league to notice what we all know here in Portland is an important step to where we're taking this franchise. We're very excited for these two young men, and as good as they are as players, they're even better people."

Selected sixth overall by Minnesota and traded to Portland in a draft-day deal, Roy led all rookies in scoring at 16.8 points per game. He also was tops among rookies in assists (4.0) and minutes (35.4) per game.

Roy shot nearly 46 percent from the field and 84 percent from the line while averaging 4.4 rebounds and 1.18 steals. He missed 25 games due to injury but helped the Trail Blazers improve by 11 wins from the previous season.

The No. 1 overall pick in 2006, Bargnani began in inconsistent fashion but became a reliable reserve and spot starter, averaging 11.6 points and 3.9 rebounds as he helped the Raptors reach the postseason for the first time in five years.

Seven players were named to the All-Rookie Second Team. Forwards Paul Millsap of the Utah Jazz, Adam Morrison of the Charlotte Bobcats, Tyrus Thomas of the Chicago Bulls and Craig Smith of Minnesota received the most votes of players selected to the Second Team.

Guards Rajon Rondo of the Boston Celtics, Marcus Williams of the New Jersey Nets and forward Walter Hermann of the Bobcats tied for the fifth spot.
