Ginobili sorry to miss out on FIBA Americas Championship

Jun 13, 2007 - 7:28 PM CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- With the San Antonio Spurs one win away from another NBA title, Manu Ginobili's thoughts are already drifting to the FIBA Americas Championship - even though he will not be playing in them.

After a grueling NBA season which appears destined to finish with his third NBA championship ring, the Argentine international accepted the advice of Spurs coach Gregg Popovich in choosing to sit out this summer's tournament - which tips off in Las Vegas on August 22.

"The decision was always mine, but the Spurs questioned how intelligent it would be to take part," Ginobili said in Argentinian newspaper Clarin.

"I understand their position and I know that, after the long season, not to play is the best decision for my health and the team. I am an investment for the Spurs and they want to take care of my career. I don't think it's bad."

Ginobili was held to only three points in Tuesday's 75-72 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers, a victory that put San Antonio up, 3-0, in the NBA Finals. However, Ginobili had a much greater influence on Game Two, scoring 25 points, and he will be a big loss for Argentina this summer.

That loss will be compounded by the absence of Spurs teammate Fabricio Oberto, as well as Charlotte's Walter Herrmann, but those players who do take part can count on Ginobili's support from afar.

"It will be really strange to watch the team on TV at home," the 29-year-old said.

"However, I know there are quite a lot of players who will feel that way. I won't miss any games."

The top two teams in the competition will earn direct berths to next year's Olympic Games in Beijing, putting the pressure on Argentina - as the reigning Olympic champions - to qualify so they can defend their crown.

Coach Sergio Hernandez has admitted his job could be on the line if Argentina fails, but Ginobili hopes it does not come to that.

"I always like coaches to have time to get used to the team," Ginobili said. "I'd like him to stay."
