Blazers' Lillard named NBA's top rookie
May 1, 2013 - 11:44 PM New York, NY (Sports Network) - Portland Trail Blazers guard Damian Lillard has been named the NBA's Rookie of the Year.Lillard, the sixth overall pick in last June's draft out of Weber State, was a unanimous selection for the honor after averaging 19.0 points and 6.5 assists in 82 games this past season.
The panel of 121 sportswriters and broadcasters all selected Lillard above Hornets center Anthony Davis and Wizards guard Bradley Beal, who finished second and third, respectively.
"I am very proud of what Damian accomplished this season," said Trail Blazers head coach Terry Stotts. "It is a testament to his talent, character and work ethic that he played at a very high and consistent level throughout his rookie season."
Lillard received every Rookie of the Month Award in the Western Conference this season and set an NBA rookie record with 185 makes from behind the arc.
The 6-foot-3 point guard is the fourth member of the Trail Blazers to receive the award, joining Geoff Petrie (1971), Sidney Wicks (1972) and Brandon Roy (2007).
There have been just three other unanimous Rookie of the Year Award winners in league history, with Ralph Sampson (1984), David Robinson (1990) and Blake Griffin (2011) being the others.
