Suns name McDonough general manager
May 7, 2013 - 9:54 PM Phoenix, AZ (Sports Network) - The Phoenix Suns have named Ryan McDonough as the club's new general manager.McDonough had been with the Boston Celtics since 2003 in a variety of roles, serving the past three years as the assistant general manager under president of basketball operations Danny Ainge.
"Ryan distinguished himself among an impressive group of candidates for our GM position," said Suns president of basketball operations Lon Babby. "His natural leadership and communication skills will serve the Suns well. And, his prodigious work ethic and ability to identify talent will enable us to take full advantage of the 10 draft choices, including six in the first round, that we have over the next three years. We welcome his championship pedigree to our organization."
McDonough joined the Celtics in 2003 as a special assistant in basketball operations, then became director of amateur scouting in 2007 and director of international scouting in 2008. He was named director of player personnel in 2008 before his promotion to assistant GM in 2010.
The 33-year-old Massachusetts native is the son of the late Boston Globe columnist Will McDonough and the brother of broadcaster Sean McDonough.
