Report: Suns to hire Hornacek as head coach
May 26, 2013 - 9:44 PM Phoenix, AZ (Sports Network) - Jeff Hornacek will become the next head coach of the Phoenix Suns after agreeing to terms on a three-year contract, the Arizona Republic reported Sunday.Hornacek, a former All-Star guard for the Suns, is expected to officially sign the deal on Monday morning.
The 50-year-old Hornacek had spent the past seven seasons on the coaching staff of the Utah Jazz and was elevated to a full-time assistant when Tyrone Corbin took over for Jerry Sloan as head coach in February of 2011.
Prior to his coaching career, Hornacek played 14 seasons in the NBA that included a six-year stint with the Suns from 1986-1992. One of the league's premier 3-point shooters during his era, the Illinois native was named an All- Star after averaging 20.1 points per game during the 1991-92 season and twice won the Three-Point Shootout competition during All-Star weekend.
Hornacek, who also interviewed for the vacant head coaching post in Charlotte, was dealt to Philadelphia the following offseason as part of the blockbuster trade that sent Hall of Famer Charles Barkley from the Sixers to the Suns.
The Suns are coming off a dreadful 25-57 season, the franchise's worst since its inaugural campaign of 1968-69, which led to the team parting ways with head coach Alvin Gentry in January. Interim coach Lindsey Hunter was not retained following the conclusion of the season.
