Hornets obtain Mo Williams from T-Wolves
Feb 10, 2015 - 7:39 PM Charlotte, NC (SportsNetwork.com) - In need of reinforcements to their injury- plagued backcourt, the Charlotte Hornets acquired guard Mo Williams from the Minnesota Timberwolves Tuesday as part of a three-player trade. The Timberwolves also sent 3-point specialist Troy Daniels as well as cash considerations to Charlotte, with guard Gary Neal and a 2019 second-round draft pick going to Minnesota in the deal.
Williams, coming off an outstanding January in which he averaged 16.9 points over 13 games and poured in a career-high 52 points in a Timberwolves' win over Indiana, will be asked to fill a void caused by Kemba Walker's absence.
Walker, Charlotte's leader in scoring (18.8 ppg) and assists (5.2/gm), underwent surgery to repair a torn lateral meniscus in his left knee on Jan. 28. The standout point guard is expected to be sidelined into March.
Williams averaged 12.2 points and 6.4 assists through 41 games for the rebuilding Timberwolves, owners of the NBA's second-worst record at 11-41.
The Hornets are presently tied with Miami for the final two playoff spots in the Eastern Conference, with Brooklyn just a game back and Detroit, Boston and Indiana also within striking distance.
Daniels began the season with Houston before being shipped to the Timberwolves as part of the Dec. 19 trade that dealt Corey Brewer to the Rockets from Minnesota. The 23-year-old guard has averaged 2.8 points and shot just 31.7 percent from 3-point range over a combined 36 games in 2014-15.
"We are excited to be adding two quality players to our organization," Hornets general manager Rich Cho said. "Mo Williams is a proven NBA player who gives us additional versatility and depth in the backcourt, both while Kemba Walker is out and after Kemba returns. Troy Daniels is an outstanding shooter who we are already familiar with from having had him in our training camp last season."
Neal averaged 9.6 points, 2.2 rebounds and 1.9 assists in 43 games this season, but was shooting a career-low 29.3 percent on 3-point tries. The 30- year-old was acquired by the Hornets from Milwaukee last February.
The 2019 second-round choice Minnesota will receive originally belonged to Miami.
