NBA veteran Shawn Marion confirms he is retiring

Jun 18, 2015 - 9:33 PM (SportsNetwork.com) - NBA veteran Shawn Marion confirmed Thursday that he is retiring after 16 seasons.

Marion, 37, told AZCentral.com in January that he planned to retire after the season to spend more time with his first child, a son named Shawn who was born last year.

He confirmed to ESPN on Thursday that he was sticking with that plan.

Marion spent this past season with the Cleveland Cavaliers, averaging 4.8 points and 19.3 minutes in 57 games, including 24 starts. He appeared in six postseason games for the Eastern Conference champions, but none in the NBA Finals against Golden State.

The four-time All-Star played his first 8 1/2 seasons for the Phoenix Suns followed by stints with Miami, Toronto and Dallas. He signed with Cleveland in September for a chance to win a second NBA title after helping the Mavericks win one in 2011.

The 6-foot-7 forward, famous for his inelegant shooting style, averaged 15.2 points, 8.7 rebounds and 1.9 assists in 1,163 career games.
