MRI reveals sprain for Varejao

Jan 28, 2008 - 11:36 PM PORTLAND, Oregon (Ticker) -- Cleveland Cavaliers forward Anderson Varejao will be sidelined indefinitely with a sprained left ankle after undergoing an MRI on Monday.

The MRI revealed no further damage, however, and Varejao will receive additional treatment before traveling to Cleveland on Tuesday.

His status will be updated after further examination at the Cleveland Clinic on Tuesday.

Varejao was injured with 3:12 left in third quarter of Sunday's game against the Los Angeles Lakers following a made layup by LeBron James, when he landed awkwardly on Lakers guard Sasha Vujacic's foot on his way down.

The 6-10 Brazilian was helped off the floor by the Cavaliers' training staff and did not return. X-rays following the game, which the Cavaliers won, 98-95, were negative.

Varejao is averaging 7.8 points and 8.5 rebounds this season.

Cleveland, which has won 10 of its last 12 games, visits Portland on Wednesday.
