Popovich confirms contract extension
May 28, 2008 - 5:17 PM SAN ANTONIO (Ticker) -- Gregg Popovich, who has coached the San Antonio Spurs to four NBA titles, recently received a contract extension through the 2011-12 season.Popovich confirmed that he signed the extension prior to the Spurs' 93-91 loss Tuesday night to the Los Angeles Lakers in Game Four of the Western Conference finals.
Popovich, 59, entered this season under contract through the 2009-10 campaign. The Indiana native guided the defending champion Spurs to a 56-26 record this season - his 12th with the team.
San Antonio, however, is on the verge of being eliminated by the Lakers, who took a commanding 3-1 series lead courtesy of Tuesday's win at AT&T Center. Game Five will be played Thursday in Los Angeles.
Popovich has guided the Spurs to NBA championships in 1999, 2003, 2005 and 2007. He owns a 632-302 career record and ranks seventh in wins among active NBA coaches.
