Anthony sentenced to probation, community service

Jun 24, 2008 - 4:29 PM DENVER (Ticker) -- Denver Nuggets forward Carmelo Anthony on Tuesday pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of driving while-ability impaired and was sentenced to probation and community service.

In exchange of Anthony's plea, prosecutors dropped a more serious DUI charge.

Anthony also pleaded guilty to failure to stay in a single lane. A judge ordered him to serve one year of probation, perform 24 hours of community service, and pay $1,000 in fines, fees and court costs.

Anthony was arrested on a suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol on April 14. He was suspended for the first two regular-season games by the Nuggets on Monday.

Nuggets vice president of basketball operations Mark Warkentien said the team takes "drinking and driving very seriously." He also said Anthony admitted he made a serious lapse in judgment.

On Monday, Anthony was named to the United States Olympic team.

Since his off-the-court problems, Anthony's future in Denver has been brought into question. Anthony has said he does not want to be traded.
